Bilingual SEO in the UAE: how to rank in English and Arabic

A practical guide to building search visibility in both English and Arabic — from keyword research and site structure to hreflang and local SEO.

The UAE is one of the few markets where a single business routinely needs to win search results in two languages with different scripts, reading directions and search habits. Treating Arabic as a translation of your English site is the most common — and most expensive — mistake we see. This guide covers how to approach bilingual SEO properly.

1. Research Arabic keywords natively

Arabic search behaviour is not a mirror of English. People mix Modern Standard Arabic with Gulf dialect, use different spellings for the same word, and sometimes type Arabic words in Latin characters. A keyword list translated from English will miss much of how your customers actually search.

  • Start from customer language: sales calls, WhatsApp conversations and reviews in Arabic.
  • Capture spelling variants — for example, different forms of the same letter and with or without the definite article.
  • Check search intent in the results themselves: the pages Google ranks tell you what it believes searchers want.

2. Give each language its own URLs

Search engines need a stable, crawlable URL for every language version of a page. A common, clean pattern is to keep your primary language at the root and place the second language in a subfolder, such as /ar/. Avoid switching languages with cookies or scripts alone — crawlers may only ever see one version.

3. Connect versions with hreflang

hreflang annotations tell search engines which pages are equivalents in other languages, so the right version appears for the right searcher. Each page should reference itself and every alternate, and the references must be reciprocal. Add an x-default to point to the version for users whose language you don't target.

4. Build a real right-to-left experience

Rankings follow engagement. An Arabic page that is simply mirrored — with broken icons, awkward line heights or Latin-optimised typography — loses visitors quickly. Set the correct lang and dir attributes on the document, use typefaces designed for Arabic, and check every component in RTL.

  • Use logical CSS properties (start/end) instead of left/right.
  • Mirror directional icons such as arrows, but not logos or media controls.
  • Write separate Arabic titles and meta descriptions instead of translating them literally.

5. Win local results in both languages

For service businesses, map results often matter more than classic organic listings. Keep your Google Business Profile complete and accurate, choose precise categories, publish updates, and encourage reviews from real customers in whichever language they prefer.

6. Measure each language separately

Segment rankings, traffic and conversions by language. It is common for one language to outperform the other, and the reasons are usually specific: thinner content, weaker internal linking or a technical issue affecting one folder. You can only fix what you can see.

Bilingual SEO isn't twice the work of English SEO — it's two strategies sharing one foundation.

Where to start

  1. Audit how your Arabic pages are currently indexed.
  2. Fix URL structure and hreflang before producing new content.
  3. Build an Arabic keyword map from real customer language.
  4. Prioritise the pages closest to revenue, then expand.
